Job Description
The successful candidate will be help customers meet their business objectives by scoping, designing and implementing complex web applications from scratch or using a third party web content management solution. The successful candidate will work with the customer to identify project requirements, then plan, document, design, prototype, and implement the appropriate solution.
He or she will typically work on teams of two to six people comprised of co-workers, client employees, and outside consultants. Many customers are outside Greater Toronto and travel within Canada and the United States is mandatory (approximately 30% to 80%).
The successful candidate must be capable of progressing quickly to new roles as Senior Web Application Programmer/Analyst, followed by future promotion to Web Application Architect. FieldCo is launching an aggressive expansion of its consulting group, and this position is the cornerstone of the expansion.
The "analyst" work will typically involve meeting with a customer to gather requirements, and then designing a solution that makes use of a web content management ("WCM") software package offered by one of our partners. The "web application programmer" work will typically involve building a web application for a complex site using Java EE best practices, best-of-breed tools, and the aforementioned WCM solution. Most work will be done using JSP, Java, and XML. SQL, web services, and integration with third party enterprise applications will also be common. The successful candidate will spend time working on internal advanced projects, keeping up-to-date with latest Java EE and web technologies, training, and other duties as required.
Technical Requirements
- at least two years of experience working with advanced web applications
- experience building or maintaining Java EE projects (EJB not required)
- proficiency with JSP, Java, SQL, XML
- basic functional knowledge of at least two databases, one of which must be among the following: Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, DB2
- comfort deploying and maintaining applications deployed on servlet engines or application servers such as Resin, Tomcat, WebSphere, WebLogic, JBoss, etc.
- comfort working with command-line tools on Unix-based operating systems (Solaris, Linux, Mac OS X, FreeBSD, AIX)
Educational and Personal Requirements
- bachelor of computer science or bachelor of arts with a major in science from a liberal arts undergraduate institution
- a will to excel
- ability to learn quickly
- strong leadership skills
- excellent English communication skills
- documented permission to work full-time in Canada and to travel to the United States for work regularly
- ability to work efficiently independently
Other Desirable Qualifications
- masters degree in computer science or a related field
- working knowledge of two of the following web content management systems: FatWire, Vignette, InterWoven, Tridion, ATG, FileNet, Documentum
- experience with performance tuning of web applications
