How to Use Scrubber

For information about what the scrubber service is and how it works, see "Technical Details".

When you first sign up for Scrubber, your account will be placed in "test mode".  During this period, you will receive all of the mail destined for your account, but the subject line will be changed for any message with a score over 10.  The subject will look something like this:

***SPAM***[18]*** Stocks on the move (this is the original subject)

The number in brackets corresponds to the score.

It is important that during test mode, you look at all of the mail that comes in with a subject with this subject format so that you can identify any messages that were flagged as possibly spam, when in fact they were not.  It is particularly important that valid emails with a score over 30 are identified as "false positive" spam matches, because when your email address comes out of test mode, mail with a score over 30 will never be delivered to your mailbox.

To report a false positive, simply follow the instructions that are sent in the body of the email in question.  You will be forwarding it to the administrator of the Scrubber service where it will be analyzed by an engineer and the tests that incorrectly identified the message as spam will be modified accordingly.

False positives with a score of 30 or more are extremely rare, and most customers do not experience them.  False positives in the 10 to 29 range are more common and should be reported, but it is not a problem to exit test mode with a few false positives in this range.
