Scrubber Anti-Spam/Anti-Virus

The Scrubber service is an advanced email filtering service.  Instead of having your mail sent directly from the sender to your mail server, when it is enabled mail is first routed to the Scrubber gateway which filters the email, and acceptable email is then forwarded to your mail server where you can pick it up.

Scrubber mail is run through multiple layers of tests.  First, any email sent to your domain that is not sent to a valid email address is immediately dropped.  Mail sent from unknown servers is referred back to the sender for a second attempt, in order to ensure that the sending server is valid in a process called tarpitting.

Next, each message is sent through a series of virus scans that prevent viruses from being delivered to your desktop.  If possible, the virus is removed.  If not, the email is quarantined and you will be emailed instructions for either retrieving the potentially infected mail or to have it deleted.

The next step subjects every incoming message to a suite of dozens of tests.  Each test contribute or deduct "points" to the total "score" of the email.  If the total score is under 10, the email is forwarded to the mail server where it can be retrieved by a client.  If the score is between 10 and 29, the message is flagged as potentially spam, but it is still forwarded to the server for delivery.  If the message has a score over 30, the message is considered to be spam and it is deleted immediately.  For most of our customers, this corresponds to over 85% of incoming email.

When a FieldCo email customer signs up for the Scrubber service, FieldCo will prepare the Scrubber service for your account.  Then, your domain's MX records will be updated to direct email to the Scrubber gateway.  This process can take up to two days.  You will notice when it is active when your spam starts to get flagged.  (see "How to Use Scrubber").   Your domain will remain in test mode for up to one month if necessary, then it will be fully enabled (see "What Happens After Scrubber is Enabled" ).

If you wish to discontinue use of Scrubber, we can immediately stop filtering your mail.  We will then revert the DNS MX records and after two days mail will not be relayed through the Scrubber server.

When Scrubber is enabled, it is normal for incoming email to be delayed for several seconds while all of the tests are performed.  If you are experiencing delays of more than one minute, please contact FieldCo and we will investigate.

The Scrubber service must be enabled for all of the email addresses on your domain.  It is not possible to enable it selectively on some addresses and not others on your domain.
